Papers written in American Psychological Association style require a title page that includes basic information about the paper and author. In addition, APA sets out specific formatting requirements for your title and header. The title page of your APA paper will use the same basic rules for formatting, font and spacing as the rest of your paper.
General Paper Formatting
All text in your paper should be written in the same font and size; 12-point Times New Roman is the font recommended by the APA guide. Your title page should be double-spaced, and the top, bottom and side margins of your pages should each be set to one inch.
Paper Title, Byline, Institution
The main information of your paper will take two to four lines and should be centered in the top half of your title page. First, write the title of your paper. APA recommends that you limit your title to under 12 words; you can split the title into two lines, separated by a colon. After the title, the next line should contain your name. Do not include titles such as Mr., Dr., or Ph.D. as part of your byline. Finally, include a line for your educational institution. If you're a student, this is the name of your school and if you're a researcher, this is the institution at which you conducted your research. These lines should be double-spaced. For example, a sample title and byline might look as follows:

Your title page's header will include two pieces of information. Page numbers should be placed in the header and justified to the right margin of your page. Your page numbers should appear right justified for the entirety of your paper, so if you set them up on the title page you can use the same formatting throughout. The header of your title page should also include your running head, justified to your page's left margin. On the title page, the running head will consist of the words "Running head:" followed by an abbreviated version of your paper's title. The abbreviated version of the paper title is fully capitalized, and shouldn't be more than 50 characters long. Pages of your paper after the title page will include this abbreviated title, but not "Running head:". For instance, the running head on the first page of your sample paper might be "Running head: THINKING THROUGH THE OTHER", and just "THINKING THROUGH THE OTHER" on each page past the first.
In certain cases, you may have to include additional information on your title page. If you are a member of a university department, have received grant funding for your research, or want to include contact information for your paper, this is included in an "author note" section on the bottom half of your title page. The first line of your author note should simply state "Author Note" and be centered in relation to the margins. Each piece of information you want to include in your author note should be given a separate line, and tabbed in one inch from the left margin. As with your title and byline and institution information, the author note must be double-spaced. For example, the following information might appear in an author note:

General APA Guidelines
Your essay should be typed and double-spaced on standard-sized paper (8.5" x 11"), with 1" margins on all sides. You should use a clear font that is highly readable. APA recommends using 12 pt. Times New Roman font.
Include a page header (also known as the "running head") at the top of every page. To create a page header/running head, insert page numbers flush right. Then type "TITLE OF YOUR PAPER" in the header flush left using all capital letters. The running head is a shortened version of your paper's title and cannot exceed 50 characters including spacing and punctuation.
Major Paper Sections
Your essay should include four major sections: the Title Page, Abstract, Main Body, and References.
The title page should contain the title of the paper, the author's name, and the institutional affiliation. Include the page header (described above) flush left with the page number flush right at the top of the page. Please note that on the title page, your page header/running head should look like this:

Pages after the title page should have a running head that looks like this:

After consulting with publication specialists at the APA, OWL staff learned that the APA 6th edition, first printing sample papers have incorrect examples of running heads on pages after the title page. Type your title in upper and lowercase letters centered in the upper half of the page. APA recommends that your title be no more than 12 words in length and that it should not contain abbreviations or words that serve no purpose. Your title may take up one or two lines. All text on the title page, and throughout your paper, should be double-spaced.
Beneath the title, type the author's name: first name, middle initial(s), and last name. Do not use titles (Dr.) or degrees (PhD).
Beneath the author's name, type the institutional affiliation, which should indicate the location where the author(s) conducted the research.
Begin a new page. Your abstract page should already include the page header (described above). On the first line of the abstract page, center the word “Abstract” (no bold, formatting, italics, underlining, or quotation marks).
Beginning with the next line, write a concise summary of the key points of your research. (Do not indent.) Your abstract should contain at least your research topic, research questions, participants, methods, results, data analysis, and conclusions. You may also include possible implications of your research and future work you see connected with your findings. Your abstract should be a single paragraph, double-spaced. Your abstract should be between 150 and 250 words.
You may also want to list keywords from your paper in your abstract. To do this, indent as you would if you were starting a new paragraph, type Keywords: (italicized), and then list your keywords. Listing your keywords will help researchers find your work in databases.

Paper. Your essay should be typed on clean, white sheet of A4 paper (8.5”x11”). Use one-inch margins on all sides.
Title Page. This is one of the mandatory parts of your essay. Include the phrase ‘Running head:’ and type your paper title. Flush left. Press Enter eight times and write your title again, include your first & last name, your teaching institution & your professor. Center this block of text.
Numbering. Your paper should be numbered consecutively, starting from page 1. Page numbers should be placed in the upper right-hand corner.
Spacing. Use double space throughout your essay.
Indentation. Paragraphs should be indented. Press TAB once.
Paragraphs. Indent paragraphs. Flush left.
Headings. Headings should be centered and capitalized.
Citation. Basic in-text citation narrows down to Author-Year style, for example:
The economic situation in most countries is forcing government departments to embrace change in order to survive (Gravenhorst, 2003).
Brunes & Jackson (2001) argue that success rates of organizational change efforts, however, have been found to be very low.
References. References come at the end of your paper. Once you are done writing, start a new page and title it ‘References’. Center your text. From a new line, list your references. Sort alphabetically. Your references will look like this:
DiFonzo, N. (2013). 10 Rumors during organizational change: a motivational analysis. The Psychology of Organizational Change: Viewing Change from the Employee's Perspective, 232.
