Academic writing master thesis
Mar 7, 2018
If the submission date is a Saturday, Sunday or a holiday, the deadline is the first working day after the deadline.
*These submission deadlines are for you who do not submit the thesis within the 1st or 2nd deadline. If you fail your thesis there are other rules and submission deadlines (see below: "Handing in the thesis").
You can find a course description for the Master's Thesis in the course catalog. Identical course descriptions for each institution have been made and can be found here:
On this page you can find most of the rules regarding the Master’s thesis.
Please note that you must only use this web form for registration of your first examination attempt .
In principle, what your state on your registration form is your best suggestion for a problem statement at the given time in the process. Naturally, this means that it is not binding. Rather, the coordinators will use the statement to find supervisors for students that have not yet found a supervisor as of 1 December.
The reasons why you should consider your “Problem statement including theory and data” as early as possible are that these considerations will influence your choice of supervisor and allow potential supervisors to determine whether they would be the right supervisor for your project. In this way, your own clarification of your research area makes it easier for you to find the right supervisor. In addition, the coordinators use your research area and your suggested title to determine whether your topic falls within the academic scope of your degree programme.
Before the deadlines (listed above) you must register your academic supervisor, the (tentative) thesis title and your problem statement by completing the thesis registration web form .
If you wish to write your Master's thesis with a fellow student from a different MSc. programme than you, you must both contact your respective academic programme coordinators. They will consider whether your common topic can be approved within both MSc. programmes.
The Master’s thesis can be written by one or two students. If you are two authors you must register by completing the same web form together (e.g. one web form for each 'group').
Before you start working on your thesis, you have to decide on a topic and develop a preliminary problem statement. Next you should contact a lecturer or a researcher in your chosen field of study and find out whether he or she would be interested in supervising you. The academic supervisor must approve your title and problem statement.
If you do not follow the scheduled programme and are registered for writing the Master’s thesis in the autumn semester, you have a deadline for finding and registering an academic supervisor and (tentative) thesis title on 1 June and must submit the thesis on 1 January. The deadline for assessment/the oral defense is 6 weeks, counting from the submission day.
You will automatically be registered for the Master’s thesis at the outset of the fourth semester with a submission deadline on 1 June. The deadline for assessment/the oral defense is 4 weeks, counting from the submission day.
Handing in your thesis
Your Master’s thesis must only be uploaded in respectively WiseFlow and [email protected] You are not allowed to hand in a paper copy of the thesis, as it is the uploaded version that is legally binding. When you have handed in the thesis in WiseFlow it will automatically be send to supervisor and external examiner.
You will receive an e-mail from WISEflow when it is possible to upload your Master's thesis. Deadline for handing in the thesis in WISEflow is 1 June at 14:00.
Once you have uploaded your thesis it is not possible to withdraw it. Therefore, you must make absolutely sure that you upload the correct version.
The flow is set up as a “group-flow”.
If the Master's thesis is written by one person you must choose "Create one-person group" in WISEflow. If you have not previously tried to upload an assignment in WISEflow as a group, please read and follow the instructions on how to submit as a group.
The thesis including appendixes must be saved as one PDF-file and uploaded under “Paper”. Read more on how to convert your paper to PDF.
Under the category “Extra material” you can upload material like movies, sound, programs (Excel, SAS mv.). The extra material does not have to be a pdf-file and you can hand in more than one file up to a maximum size of 5 GB.
Even though your thesis is confidential, you must upload it to [email protected] However, your confidential thesis will not be available for reading and/or lending.
Handing in from 15 May - 31 May
Theses handed in from 15 May -31 May will not be sent to evaluation before the deadline 1 June.
The department will send you information regarding the oral defence of the thesis either via mail or BlackBoard. The deadline for assessment/the oral defense is 6 weeks, counting from the submission day.
Oral defence of Master’s thesis conducted abroad via Skype
In order for the oral defence to take place abroad, your application for dispensation to hold your exam off-campus must have been granted. The dispensation must include an approval of the supervisor and the exam venue.
Your application for dispensation must provide documentation for the following:
- The circumstances justifying the wish for an off-campus exam
- The Danish agency (embassy, consulate, partner university) providing the exam venue
- The person who has agreed to supervise the exaam.
You must submit the application for dispensation no later than 6 weeks before you submit your Master’s thesis.
If you do not submit the thesis within the deadline
If the thesis is not handed in before the deadline, you have used one examination attempt. You will have to prepare a modified problem statement which must be approved by your supervisor. You must not use the registration web form for your 2nd and 3rd examination attempt, but please instead contact your supervisor directly. You have a new deadline of three months to submit the thesis, starting from the initial deadline.
If you do not submit the thesis before the new deadline, you have used the second out of the three attempts to pass the thesis. You will again have to prepare a modified problem statement which must be approved by the supervisor. You have one final deadline of 3 months to submit the thesis, starting from the second deadline.
If you fail your thesis
If you fail the thesis, one examination attempt has been used. You will then have to prepare a modified problem statement which must be approved by the supervisor. You must not use the registration web form for your 2nd and 3rd examination attempt, but please instead contact your supervisor directly. You have a new deadline of 3 months to submit the thesis, starting from the date of assessment for the first attempt. The same procedure will follow if you fail the second attempt.
