The thesis work is usually given in relation to current research projects at the department or to industrial projects in cooperation with industrial partners, however the thesis work may also be in the form of feasibility studies that will form the basis for new projects. Because of the close cooperation with SINTEF and PFI, researchers from these organizations often act as supervisors for the thesis work. From our industrial partners we receive each year several proposals for thesis work; sometimes with an additional offer for a summer job.
The master thesis work is carried out in the last spring semester of your studies. You have 20 weeks to do the work (approx. 5 months including Easter vacation).
Starting the thesis work - the master contract
To start your thesis work, you must make an agreement with a supervisor at the department. The main supervisor must be employed at NTNU as a professor, associate professor or assistant professor. This also applies when the work is performed at a facility outside of NTNU. The department will give information about choosing a topic for your master thesis during the autumn semester.
To formally start your work on the thesis you need to register in DAIM (Digital archiving and submission of theses) and fill out the master contract. This contract must be signed by both the student and the main supervisor and then handed in at the department office by the 15th of January. A hazardous activity identification/ risk assessment form should be handed in together with the master contract (see below).

Hazardous activity identification and risk assessment
Before starting work on your thesis you must also do a hazardous activity identification (this applies also for work that is purely theoretical) and a risk assessment of all the activities identified in the hazardous activity identification process (not necessary for theoretical work). The hazardous activity identification/ risk assessment form is filled out in cooperation with your supervisor(s) and must be signed by the main supervisor. Questions on how to perform the risk assessment can be directed to the HSE-coordinator at the department, Gunn Torill Wikdahl. The completed and signed form is handed in at the department office together with your master contract.

Submitting the master thesis
The thesis must be submitted via DAIM, the same system that was used to write the master contract. The thesis is uploaded as a pdf file and then sent automatically for printing at the printing office. When the printing is complete, the printed copies are sent directly from the printing office to the department office. The department pays for mandatory printing of the thesis (three copies to the department and one for you).

All students in a Biomedical Engineering dual degree are required to complete a biomedical engineering thesis. That means you will need to choose a topic with a biomedical engineering aspect to it, your supervisor must be an academic staff member from the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering, and you will need to enrol in a biomed thesis code as outlined below.
In the months prior to commencing your thesis the school office will contact you with instructions on how to select a thesis topic and supervisor. You will be sent a log-in password to enable you to access the Thesis Topic Database in Moodle. Browse the database and select your three preferred projects (note that you are required to select at least 2 different supervisors). When you have identified a topic of interest, contact the supervisor to discuss your ideas and see if they will be able to accept you as a research student. Projects will be allocated based on student preferences and supervisor loads.

You will also need to enrol in the correct Biomedical Engineering thesis courses for your degree as outlined below. Thesis A students will need to complete their enrolment via myUNSW. Thesis C students in either BIOM9020/BIOM9021 or BIOM9914 will need to contact the School Office to be enrolled, once you have been assigned a supervisor and a project.
NOTE: If your research will require you to access the GSBME laboratories (Lower Ground or Level 4 of Samuels Building), it is essential that you enrol in a GSBME laboratory induction before you commence your research thesis course. Your swipe card will not be activated with access to these floors until you have completed this induction. Failure to do so will result in a delay to you beginning your research. Please contact the GSBME Laboratory Manager to arrange a suitable time to undertake the Laboratory Induction once you have been assigned a supervisor and project.

Undergraduate students in honours degree programs are required to complete a thesis research project though enrolment in CEIC4002 Thesis A (6 UOC) followed by CEIC4003 Thesis B (6 UOC) in the final year of study. Advanced thesis options may be available as elective alternatives to standard thesis.

This brochure is intended for all UG thesis (e.g. ELEC4120, TELE4120, etc) students who will start Part A in the forthcoming semester.
Please follow the steps shown below:
Step 1: Please go to: http://moodle.telt.unsw.edu.au/course/view.php?id=20890 and enrol yourself as a student; the self-enrolment key is EETTPstudent
Step 2: This Moodle portal ‘EET School Thesis/Project’ is set up to help students find a supervisor and a thesis/project topic to work on. You can view the research profiles of prospective supervisors and topics by clicking on the ‘Research Topics’ icon. Please note that the topics list is only indicative and may not show all the topics available. Supervisors may have other new topics in mind or you may want to propose your own topic that matches the supervisor’ interests and expertise.
When you have found a supervisor with a topic that suits your interests, you are required to contact this person to discuss your intention. If you both agree to team up, ask the supervisor to email you to confirm approval of the topic title. You can then proceed to register. Warning: registration must be done as soon as approval is granted (within 1 week). Supervisors have the right to void late registrations.
Step 3: Go into Moodle ‘EET School Thesis/Project’, click ‘Registration’ icon then click ‘Select Supervisor’. Find your supervisor name and click the action box to become a member.
Step 4: From the home page, click ‘Registration’ icon then click ‘Register Topic’, ‘Add Entry’ and enter your details and topic title.
Step 5: Furthermore, you must enrol in the appropriate thesis/project course code on myUNSW, as you would normally enroll in other courses.

1. How do I find a topic?
There are a wide range of topics available for you to choose and you can even come up with your own, the choice is yours!
For instance, you may choose to formulate your own thesis topic and can register your topic through Moodle, once you have the agreement of your supervisor. You may wish to select a topic based on areas of engineering interest, extracurricular interests (such as Redback Racing or the sUNSWift team), or preference for working with a particular academic in your field. Preformulated topics are also available on the Thesis Moodle. Take a look!
2. How do I find an academic advisor?
Thesis Moodle! There is a database with pre-existing topics and a supervisor database that lists their research interests.
3. I am an employed engineer, can I do a project based on my work?
Projects based on current employment are highly encouraged! However, they must meet the requirements of advanced independent study. In addition, work-based projects must be approved by the Thesis Coordinator (Tracie Barber) prior to enrolment.
4. How do I submit my thesis?
All thesis assessment submission are in soft copy form:
- Submit 1 copy to the Thesis B submission box
- Submit 1 copy to the Turnitin, via the link in the submission block on your Thesis B Moodle
The thesis submission deadline is generally Monday of Week 13 in each semester. If in doubt, consult your Thesis Course Outline.
5. Where do I get more information?
Each semester, students enrolled in courses offered by the School will receive an email invitation to attend a talk given by the Thesis Coordinator (Tracie Barber). In this talk, she will introduce you to the process and answer any questions you may have.

Mining students enrol in thesis courses MINE4440 Mining Research Project I and MINE4450 Mining Research Project II. MINE4440 is only offered in the first semester of each academic year. Commencement of MINE4450 can only be undertaken after the student has satisfactorily completed all requirements of MINE4440. You can find all information regarding topics, supervision and submission on the MINE4440 Moodle page. You are required to follow the process as stated there.
Students gain hands-on experience of the complete evaluation of an actual field off-shore Australia. This course covers (a) Regional and Field Geology, (b) Seismic interpretation, (c) Well test analysis to determine well flow potential, (d) Log and Formation Test Evaluation-analyses, and (e) an estimate of the hydrocarbons in place. All above analysis will form a static model of the reservoir in PETREL Software.

Photovoltaic and Renewable Energy Engineering
The course comprises six units of credit in the first session and six units of credit in the second session. As a rough guide students are expected to work on their thesis for at least 6 hours per week in each session. During this time students are involved with directed laboratory and research work on an approved topic and under the guidance of members of the academic and research staff.
The thesis is an opportunity for you to demonstrate what you have learned throughout your studies in PV and RE. It is expected that your research, analytical work, and writing will far exceed the level of work completed in your second year project. The thesis comprises a large portion of student’s WAM calculations which is used to assign Honours levels and to assess APA applications.
The School also awards a prize for the best thesis in photovoltaics every year. There is also another thesis prize awarded by ANZSES each year.
