Since the 1960s, nuclear energy has been a fundamental part of our life. From the Cold War to your lamp, nuclear energy has been there.

There are many benefits to nuclear energy. For example, nuclear energy powers many things including anything that uses electricity, submarines, and bombs. Currently, some scientists are developing ways for nuclear energy to power aircraft and automobiles. In addition, nuclear energy provides thousands of jobs at places like nuclear power plants, nuclear research centers, and missile silos.

More importantly, though, is the fact that nuclear power plants don't pollute. You can have as many nuclear power plants as you want, without pollution or, with the exception of radiation, harm to the environment.

Although nuclear energy has many benefits, the disadvantages are many. Radiation exposure can be deadly. An example of this would be the world's worst nuclear accident, which occurred in Chernobyl, Ukraine (which at the time was part of the Soviet Union). In April, 1986, the cover of a nuclear reactor exploded, releasing deadly radiation into the atmosphere. At least 31 people were killed instantaneously. More than 100,000 people had to be evacuated.

Today, the radiation is still spreading and people are still dieing all over Europe from radiation-related diseases. About 3 million people live in radioactive areas. Shockingly, 10,000 people still even live in Chernobyl! The exact effects of the radiation are still unknown and are currently being researched.

Another example would be a nuclear accident that occurred in Three Mile Island, Pennsylvania. During the spring of March, 1979, the nuclear power plant overheated, resulting in the breaking of radioactive rods. Fortunately, there were no casualties and no radiation was released into the atmosphere.

Another problem with using nuclear energy is that we need a way to easily dispose of nuclear waste. It takes a hundred years for nuclear waste to lose its radioactivity. So, we need a place to store it. Well, the problem is, there is over 300 metric tons of nuclear waste and the number is growing. Nuclear waste has to be managed for a hundred years before it is safe. Storing large amounts of nuclear waste for a hundred years would be expensive. Also, what if political powers shift or funding for nuclear waste management declines? Nuclear waste sites could be abandoned if political powers shifted or funding declined, leaving much radioactive waste just sitting there. In addition, nuclear storage facilities must be located in sparsely populated areas.

Now, the following doesn't have to do with nuclear energy, but 'tis related to the topic. Nuclear weapons are a dangerous and controversial thing. In a way, they could be considered a form of nuclear energy (if not, then the glow from the radiation will reduce the need for lights at night).

Although nuclear weapons may be powerful, they are hazardous and deadly. Nuclear weapons can literally blow you off the face of the earth!

In my opinion, there isn't much of a need for nuclear weapons. Wasn't the atomic bomb enough? Is it really isn't fair to destroy entire cities just because of a few people or a decision? How would you feel if your flowers started glowing? It would be a shame if the U.S. blew up its own country by mistake!

Even worse, is the aftershock of a nuclear catastrophe. The effects of nuclear war and radiation are not limited. One example of this is Sweden. They have been receiving large amounts of nuclear pollution from Russia. Their fishing industry is endangered because of Russian nuclear subs just lying on the coast in a dilapidated state. After the nuclear accident in Chernobyl, Sweden was the first country to observe the large amounts of radiation in the air. Basically, Sweden is being plagued by a problem it did not cause and has no control over.

In addition to the example above, if there were a major nuclear war, a nuclear winter more likely than not would result. In a nuclear war, dust, smoke, and radioactive particles would create a large cloud palling the planet, which would block out sunlight. As an effect of the sunlight being blocked, temperatures would drop so low they would be inhospitable to most organisms, including humans. If you managed to survive the radiation from the bomb and the intolerable temperatures, you would next have to deal with starvation.

On the whole, nuclear energy is a good thing for the world. But precautions must be taken to reduce harm to the environment (radiation), increase the safety of everyone, eliminate accidents, and prevent the making and use of nuclear weapons.
