Students can use these paragraph topic prompts to help practice writing a paragraph. This is a great structure for kids to work on story organization, where they'll use good details to support their main idea.

Now that you have explored paraphrasing, summarizing and quoting, it is time to practice!  There are three main parts to this activity. Part 1 is creating the paraphrase, summary and quote. Part 2 is submitting your work to your small group discussion board for review and comment by your group members. Part 3 is submitting the a document that contains both the original and final version of your work to the Assignments section of Blackboard.



Read the following excerpt from page 7 of “

The Prince and the Pauper: A Tale for Young People of all Ages, Volume 1” by Mark Twain.



By and by Tom's reading and dreaming about princely life wrought such a strong effect upon him that he began to act the prince, unconsciously.  His speech and manners became curiously ceremonious and courtly, to the vast admiration and amusement of his intimates. But Tom's influence among these young people began to grow, now, day by day; and in time he came to be looked up to, by them, with a sort of wondering awe, as a superior being.  He seemed to know so much! and he could do and say such marvelous things! and withal, he was so deep and wise! Tom's remarks, and Tom's performances, were reported by the boys to their elders; and these, also, presently began to discuss Tom Canty, and to regard him as a most gifted and extraordinary creature. Full grown people brought their perplexities to Tom for solution, and were often astonished at the wit and wisdom of his decisions. In fact he was become a hero to all who knew him except his own family -- these, only, saw nothing in him.

Part 1.A: Paraphrase the Excerpt


Using the excerpt above, and following the guidelines found in the Purdue OWL readings, create a paraphrase of the paragraph.



Part 1.B: Summarize the Excerpt


Using the same excerpt and following the guidelines found in the Purdue OWL readings, create a summary of the paragraph.



Part 1.C: Quote Part of the Excerpt


Using a narrow segment of the excerpt and following the guidelines found in the Purdue OWL readings, create a short paragraph that contains a quote.  Be sure to include the correct attributions to the author.



Part 2:  Submit to your small group discussion board; review and comment within your group.

In the discussion board area of Blackboard, I have created multiple small group forums of three or four people each. The purpose of this discussion is two-fold. First, you will have a chance to let other's review your work and help you check for accuracy in preparation for submitting your final product. Second, you can see how others go about achieving the same goal given the same set of resources.  


Please follow these instructions:

  1. You are to submit your writings from Part 1.A, B and C to your group discussion in a single posting. This is to be done by Wednesday, 11:45 PM.

  2. Review the submissions of each group member.  Consider the following:

  • Reply to each submission and Include one comment on the strengths of their work, and one on any opportunities for improvement in their work. If you see an area of concern, be sure to provide an example of how it could be improved. VERY IMPORTANT: for the sake of clarity, be sure to change the subject line when you reply. Add Paraphrase, Summary and/or Quote in the subject to note which part or parts you are commenting on.

    All comments should be made by Friday, 11:45 PM.

  • The final goal of this port of the activity is to make sure your examples are formatted correctly to avoid plagiarism.

  • Part 3: Submit your final examples to the Activity 2 Assignment in the Blackboard Assignments area.


    Now that you have reviewed your peer's work and had your work reviewed, please compile the following into a single document and submit it to the Activity 2 Assignment in Blackboard:

    1. your original paraphrase and your final paraphrase. If there have been changes, briefly describe what they were.

    2. your original summary and your final summary.

      If there have been changes, briefly describe what they were.

    3. your original quote and your final quote.

      If there have been changes, briefly describe what they were.
