We all need people who will give us feedback. That's how we improve. Bill Gates You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time. Abraham Lincoln A deep sense of love and belonging is an irreducible need of all people. We are biologically, cognitively, physically, and spiritually wired to love, to be loved, and to belong. When those needs are not met, we don't function as we were meant to. We break. We fall apart. We numb. We ache. We hurt others. We get sick. Brene Brown Everyone loved my father. He was so nice that people took advantage of him. We were lower middle class. I slept in the hallway on a cot that rolled away during the day, and my younger brother and sister slept in my parents' room. My goal as a kid was to someday have my own room and to own a car - and I wanted to be able to take care of my parents. Jerry Reinsdorf In the past, people were born royal. Nowadays, royalty comes from what you do. Gianni Versace The only thing that will make you happy is being happy with who you are, and not who people think you are. Goldie Hawn I say what I want to say and do what I want to do. There's no in between. People will either love you for it or hate you for it. Eminem People take different roads seeking fulfillment and happiness. Just because they're not on your road doesn't mean they've gotten lost. H. Jackson Brown, Jr. A hero is somebody who is selfless, who is generous in spirit, who just tries to give back as much as possible and help people. A hero to me is someone who saves people and who really deeply cares. Debi Mazar I like to listen. I have learned a great deal from listening carefully. Most people never listen. Ernest Hemingway
The Book addresses the management of the dissertation process as opposed to how to do a dissertation. It covers such areas as:
1- Organizing your work, your time, and your readings with several very useful suggestions including organizing your readings and files; structuring your activities; and strategies for work-life balance.
2- Planning for dissertation and the timelines for the overall dissertation and specific activities.
3- Dealing with and managing your advisor and/or committee.
4- The technology and software you need to complete your dissertation efficiently. (Note: The author does not suggest specific solutions but offers a comprehensive list of the software categories you will need).
Overall, the book offers an excellent overview of everything a doctoral student needs to manage and organize and manage his/her work at the dissertation stage. There is no discussion of research design or methods as the book concentrates on how you should manage these activities instead of how to carry them out.
The only reason I gave the book 4 stars instead of 5 is that it primarily addresses the needs of full-time PhD students only. Most of the discussions on managing the advisor/committee relationship, for example, are not really relevant for a part-time doctoral candidate.
